What does each search criteria mean?

Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)

We search for any potential associations between the candidate’s online identifiers (such as usernames, aliases, or email addresses) and digital environments known to be linked to child sexual exploitation. This includes peer-to-peer networks, hidden forums, encrypted messaging platforms, and data leaks where grooming-related content, terminology, or behaviours are present. Our checks focus on indicators such as account presence in flagged forums, references to coded language associated with exploitation, or exposure to known risk environments.

Radicalisation

We search for any connection between the candidate’s digital footprint and online environments that promote or glorify extremist ideologies. In line with the UK government’s definition, radicalisation refers to “the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and extremist ideologies associated with terrorist groups.” As part of this check, we look for usernames, aliases, or digital traces in spaces known to share or encourage radical content, including material associated with proscribed organisations.

Hate Speech & Extremist Organisations

We examine digital environments where hate speech or support for extremist group activity is present. This includes forums, chat logs, and websites that promote hostility or discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics. We also check for associations with groups named on official government lists of proscribed terrorist organisations, both domestic and international, as well as recognised hate symbols, slogans, or other repeat engagement with discriminatory content.
